Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with mouth restoration. It includes the replacement or restoration of damaged or missing teeth with artificial alternatives. Prostheses like crowns, bridges or dentures are used to make sure that oral aesthetics and appearance are as intended.
These complex dental and facial procedures are performed by highly trained experts. They also play a serious role in cosmetic dentistry where facial features are altered to perfection.
Prosthodontists mainly deal with replacing damaged or missing teeth. When a tooth is found damaged, lost or decayed, a prosthodontist will be able to provide the necessary treatment options. After careful evaluation assessment, the right procedure can be applied to the patient. A crown may be created to restore an individual damaged tooth back to its original form and function. A bridge is usually recommended while replacing one or more teeth.

Dentures And How They Help?
If we lose all our natural teeth, the consequences are hard. It will directly affect our ability to speak and eat due to its effect on facial muscles. Tooth decay, injury, gum disease etc can contribute to this condition.
There will also be a considerable effect on the appearance due to the missing teeth. A denture (artificial teeth) can help you overcome all of these conditions by playing substitute to our natural teeth in an effective way.
Partial and Complete Dentures
Dentures can be made partial or complete. Complete dentures are a full set of artificial replacement teeth. They are designed for the upper arch and/or lower arch. And are easy to remove and clean regularly.
But if there are only a few teeth lost, patients can opt for partial dentures which can complete the teeth structure. They normally take support from gums and are stabilised with the help of specially designed clasps.
Removable and Fixed Dentures
Dentures can either be fixed or partial. In some cases, partial dentures are fixed to our natural teeth. They are often referred to as Bridges.
You might be familiar with a set of dentures/ artificial teeth if you have your grandfather or grandmother living with you. This is a direct example of removable full denture. They however contribute to bone loss in the long run. As a solution to this problem, implant supported fixed dentures can be used. They are implanted directly into the living bone tissue. The use of Titanium implants helps fuse the implant into the jaw bone ensuring a perfect seating of the denture and minimal loss of bone. Implant supported dentures are also superior in function compared to regular dentures.
