How does dental filling help?

  • Brings back the shape
  • Makes the tooth stable
  • Makes chewing easier
  • Prevents loss of teeth
  • Prevents further decay or damage of teeth

When to use a dental filling?

Tooth Decay

A dental filling can be used to fill holes in the tooth enamel but not have affected the inner pulp. Tooth pulp consists of tissues, nerves and blood vessels and is beyond the scope of this procedure.

Injured or broken teeth

Due to injuries because of an accident or other reasons, enamels get chipped off exposing the inner teeth to infection and decay.

Restore

A dental filling can help restore worn out or eroded teeth.

Procedure

When there are dental caries causing tooth infection, the infected tissue is removed leaving a cavity behind. This cavity is carefully fixed using dental filling material. A dental filling can also be used to fix fractured teeth. It can also help to restore tooth structures lost due to pathological or physiological wear.

Types of Dental Filling

There are different types of filling materials. From materials that imitate the original tooth to gold and silver. Materials like porcelain can also be used for dental fillings.

Tooth coloured fillings

This white coloured material is a mixture of plastic resin and powdered glass. They are used to fill the cavity and almost make the tooth look original. Such fillings also release a small amount of fluoride minimising the risk of further tooth decay.

Silver fillings

Silver amalgam is widely used in dental fillings. It is a mixture of silver alloy & mercury and can last longer than other materials. WHO approves the use of silver fillings because of their safety and durability.

Gold fillings

This is one of the most expensive options in dental fillings. They are durable but also contribute to tooth sensitivity. Gold fillings are usually made of a mixture of gold, copper and other metals. They are also used for crown and partial dentures.

A lot of people choose gold filling as a symbol of pride and aristocracy.

What if we ignore it?

It would be unwise to let the damage or decay in the enamel go unattended. Because it will spread to the inner part of the teeth causing more pain and instability. If we ignore it further, there are chances of tooth loss and/or severe pain.

At this point, we will have to use methods like root canal which are complex and painful. A simple procedure like dental filling can help a lot in saving our teeth, effort and money.
