Periodontics

  • Treatment of gums
  • Helps treat the surrounding structures of teeth
  • Treatments related to gums, jaw bone, cementum and periodontal ligament

Dental care and oral care go hand in hand. It is essential to maintain a high level of oral hygiene irrespective of dental care efforts. Any infection to the gums or inside the mouth will directly affect teeth and might even result in tooth loss.

Loss of teeth directly contributes to degraded facial expression, difficulties in speech and food intake, other oral complications. And there is severe, unbearable pain associated with any oral infection which is very bad when it happens to children or the elderly.

Make sure that both teeth, gums and oral health care are at their best to avoid difficult situations.

What is Periodontics?

Peri = around Odons = tooth
Periodontics is the branch of dental science that deals with the care and treatment of supporting structures around the teeth. This includes gums / gingiva, jaw bone/ alveolar, cementum which connects the tooth to jawbone, periodontal ligament holding tooth in place in the jaw bone.

Gingivitis

It is the inflammation of the gums due to infection. Gingivitis happens due to poor oral and dental hygiene. The tissue around the teeth gets infected and results in swollen gums. Keeping our mouth clean and safe oral and dental practices can help reduce this problem.

Periodontitis

It is a serious form of oral infection where not only gums, the periodontal structures around the base of the teeth are also affected. It causes severe pain / toothache and might result in tooth loss if left unattended.

Non Surgical Procedures

To remove plaque and tartar deep under the gum, scaling and root planing procedures are used. They are often accompanied by antibiotic medicines for better results.

The use of a custom fit tray delivery system is also used for treatment. They are generally an impression of our teeth with medication added to it.

Surgical Treatments

When it gets serious both periodontitis and gingivitis can cause root exposure of the tooth’s root, receded or pulled back gums etc. As a part of the surgical procedure, a gum graft can be performed to fix the pulled back gum by collecting tissue from the roof of the mouth.

A periodontist is also skilled enough to perform

  • Dental crown
  • Dental implants
  • Laser treatments
  • Procedure to encourage bone and tissue growth
  • Periodontal pocket reduction procedures
  • Cosmetic surgery
